“The Ice Book” Elicits an Eloquent Magical Realism Simplicity

Here’s some inspiration for the day. Davy & Kristin McGuire created this “during a four month artist residency at the Kuenstlerdorf Schoeppingen in Germany.”

Apparently all they had was a 5D, some green screen material and access to After Effects.

This may be the most creative thing I’ve seen all week. I am definitely interested in seeing if I can catch a show.

NASA – The Frontier Is Everywhere is Breathtaking

I found this over at Geekologie and there’s a good quote explaining the reason for the video’s existence – which was probably lifted from Huffington Post – where he links it from – but I like Geekologie much more. So he wins.

This video essentially sums up everything that inspires me. Why I love fiction – science fiction – space travel – it all comes down to hope, progress, idealism, motivation, evolution.

“It will not be we who reach Alpha Centauri and the other nearby stars. It will be a species very like us, but with more of our strengths, and fewer of our weaknesses.”

Thank you thank you thank you Carl Sagan.

Beautifully Horrific Closeups of the Eyes By: Suren Manvelyan

Check out the original post here.

Being a visual fellow, and messing frequently with optics and lenses – I always sort of imagined eyeballs having a construction similar to that of a lens. The layers of glass – the flexibility of the iris were after all modeled after the eye to process imagery properly.

But these images, with their striking clarity reveal a much more…goopy reality.

It sort of makes me shutter and strangely tear up to these images (keep in mind I cannot see any sort of depiction of eyes being mishandled or fooled with in media – ex. Bleeding eyes in James Bond – Eye removal in Minority Report, etc.).

Of course it’s naive to think that our iris and pupils are made up of nothing more than a few slats of thinly cut titanium greased to perfection to expose images to  logarithmic proportions, but….it’s so much more complex than I imagined.

Gossamer tendrils threading through, expand, contract – (leaves holes?!) look like rumpled bedsheets or in some cases a space photograph of a mountain range and apparently are constructed differently for each person?! Then the pupil has the texture of what appears to be dark raspberry fruit loops?! On top of that it’s recessed BEHIND the iris?!

And seeing the depth and level of space between the surface of the pupil to the surface of the eyeball with as much clarity as if you were looking through glass just made me nauseous.

It’s days like these I both love and fear the internet.
